When you have firearms in your house, it is essential to chat with your kids about safety issues. If your kids are little, there is no point in having a conversation now, but sooner rather than later, you need to talk. When your child reaches an age when he can comprehend the value and the danger of having a gun at home, you can initiate the conversation.

A Gun Is Not A Toy: Kids are curious about many things and want to know how things work. The children see firearms being used on the telly frequently. The favorite action hero and the cartoon characters carry a gun and use the same to teach the bad guy a lesson. The kids can be influenced by what they see on TV and online. But, as a parent, you must let the children know that a gun is not a toy. Messing around with a pistol may lead to severe consequences. One can quickly get badly wounded and even die from a gun wound. Let them know the statistics that show countless people die over mishandling the gun.

A Gun Is Not Evil: When you discuss firearm safety measures, you must also tell them why you want a pistol in the house. A child can get easily traumatized by learning all the harmful facts about the gun. You don’t want your kid to faint whenever they see someone holding a gun. Therefore, let them know the good side of owning a gun. A firearm provides you with a sense of security and safety in your house.

How To Handle A Gun: It is not enough to learn about firearms in theory; it would help if you let your kid know how to handle a gun. He must know what to do if he sees a gun lying on the table and no one is around. Should he let the gun sit on the table, or should he pick it up and keep it in the vault where it belongs? You may send your son to a shooting class where he learns shooting from an expert. Or you can teach your kid shooting all by yourself and make a day out of it.

    • A lot of people love to assemble rifles and other guns at home. They prefer to purchase the parts from the shop and then put it all together. For example, you may teach your son how to build an AR15, or you may even show how to dismantle the machine taking one piece at a time.
    • Even if one takes out the magazine, the gun can still be loaded with a single bullet. Therefore, one must always point the mouth of the gun to open space while cleaning out the machine.

Disagreements On Gun: While they are learning about the value of firearms, they should also be aware that people have different opinions on owning guns. Some people do not want civilians to own a gun, while others oppose that view. There are good arguments for both sides. Let your child learn more about the fact to form an independent opinion. However, he is allowed to change his perspective over time.
