A lot of people believe that all kinds of dental emergencies are addressed using the same kind of treatment. But the truth is that some of these emergencies must be treated by a skilled dentist as soon as possible, while others can wait to be addressed.  It’s important to understand when to call a dentist in Brooklyn, New York, to schedule an emergency dental appointment

How to Avoid a Dental Emergency

To prevent a dental emergency, precautions must be taken. But some dental emergencies are unavoidable. For instance, when you take part in sports, you can prevent a dental emergency when you wear a mouthguard. Also, you can avoid this type of emergency when you do not some hard foods that can break your teeth.

    Kinds of Dental Emergencies

Below are common kinds of dental emergencies that anyone can experience:

    • Teeth and gum damage. Damaged gums are a type of soft tissue injury that can occur when you are involved in an accident. They are common in slip and fall accidents and car accidents. Usually, teeth can be damaged when there is a crack, chip, or break on them. Some soft tissue injuries may require a visit to an emergency dentist, while others may require a visit to the emergency room.
    • Swelling. When a big part of the mouth is swelling, this must be taken as a dental emergency. Swelling indicates the existence of an oral issue. Usually, it results from a dental abscess or advanced gum disease that can result in a mouth infection.
    • Lost crowns or fillings. Dental crowns and fillings are meant to protect teeth. Thus, a loss of these treatments must be considered a dental emergency. A tooth that loses protection due to a removed filling or crown can be exposed to infection. Thus, the protection must be replaced as soon as possible. A lost adult tooth is a permanent loss. Because your mouth can only be fully healthy when it has a complete set of teeth, missing teeth must be replaced right away.
    • Toothache. Serious toothache can be a sign of different dental issues, and the cause must be identified to treat it properly. Toothaches can occur because of pulp infections or when something is stuck between your teeth. If your tooth pain is persistent and quite intense, you should visit an emergency dentist.

Dental emergencies can happen for various reasons. If you are having this kind of emergency, ensure you act quickly. Some dental emergencies require same-day treatments, so you must see a dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist can determine whether or not your condition requires immediate attention.
