Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that increases one’s breast size. It involves placing implants under the chest muscles or breast tissue. The goal is to enhance the patient’s breast shape or create a more flattering breast profile.

People get breast implants for various reasons. These reasons include enhancing symmetry between breasts, improving one’s self-confidence, or making adjustments due to sickness, weight loss, and breastfeeding.

Breast implants can offer many benefits to those who get them. But, as it is a surgical procedure, you must go into it with full awareness.

    Breast Implants Don’t Last Forever

Modern breast implants often last for at least a decade. But they will need replacement or removal at some point. Some implants may also rupture, which will require surgery to remove.

Implants also cannot prevent aging. Bodily changes such as loss of skin elasticity, weight gain, or weight loss could affect the appearance of your breasts.

Taking care of your breast implants is essential even after recovery.

Periodic monitoring can help you stay on top of your health. These checks also help ensure your implants are in good condition. Mammograms, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), and ultrasounds can help you check for ruptures or other issues.

    They Don’t Come Cheap

Getting breast implants in Toronto costs at least several thousand dollars. This depends on your surgeon, the implant type, and your location.

But most breast augmentation surgeries are cosmetic. For this reason, some insurance plans may not cover them. For example, Toronto’s regular health services and the Ontario Health Insurance Plan do not cover cosmetic surgery costs.

If you’re determined to get breast implants, ensure you have enough funds. Aside from the surgery, you may need to spend money on doctor’s visits and recovery.

    Managing Expectations is Essential

Breast implants add fullness to the breast. It cannot change its shape or address sagging. Pre-surgery exams will help you understand what to expect after the process.

If you have any other issues, your surgeon may recommend additional procedures. For example, if you want to reduce sagging, your doctor may perform a breast lift.

Before your surgery, ask your doctor questions. They can help you better understand the surgery’s effects on your health.

    You Have Many Options

Silicone breast implants have evolved since plastic surgeons used them 60 years ago. They are still a popular choice due to their natural look and feel. However, other implant options are now available that suit different needs and preferences.

Aside from silicone, saline implants are also a popular choice. These implants contain a saline solution instead of silicone. In the event of a rupture, the body can absorb the solution, raising fewer issues.

You might even forgo implants for other cosmetic procedures. You can opt for a breast lift if your issues revolve around sagging instead of fullness.

    They Come With Risks

Like any other surgical procedure, breast implants come with risks. Early this year, a report revealed thousands of suspected breast implant-related injuries. Some manufacturers did not report these injuries to Health Canada for many years.

Before your surgery, speak with your surgeon and understand the risks involved. Some of these risks include:

    • Breast pain
    • Infection
    • Implant ruptures
    • Changes in position
    • Changes in nipple/breast sensitivity

Breast implants can be the best thing to happen for some people. Many have reported feeling more comfortable with their bodies after a breast augmentation.

However, it is essential to understand the risks of the procedure. Careful consideration helps ensure your safety and personal satisfaction after the process.
