If you are experiencing gum bleeding whenever you brush your teeth, this could mean something is not right. At first, you may just ignore this situation, but when this has been persistent, you may have to see visit a dental practice in Maryville, TN, to get an evaluation.

When your gums are healthy, they should not bleed. There could be some reasons your gums bleed, including the following:

Brushing or Flossing Your Teeth Too Hard

Everyday brushing and flossing are essential to maintain good oral health. However, doing it with too much force can damage your gums and cause gumline erosion. Receding gums can present symptoms such as bleeding and soreness. When not treated, they can also result in tooth loss.

To prevent bleeding gums when cleaning your teeth at home, use a toothbrush with soft bristles and non-abrasive toothpaste. Also, apply gentle pressure when you floss your teeth.

    Gum Disease

Gum disease causes gum bleeding, especially when you brush and floss your teeth. In its early stages, it causes irritation, redness, and swelling in the portion where your gums meet your teeth’s base. When not addressed right away, it can lead to an infection that can cause bone and teeth damage. Treatments for gum disease include professional dental cleaning, surgical treatments, or scaling and root planing.

    Abscessed Tooth

A tooth crack or cavity can allow harmful bacteria to enter your dental pulp’s crevices. An infection in this area can lead to root swelling, which causes your gums to be inflamed and tender. Your dentist will drain the abscessed area or do a root canal procedure to address the infection. But in serious cases, tooth extraction may be necessary.

    Ill-Fitting Dentures

Dentures must fit properly and let you eat, smile, and speak comfortably. However, with age, you can lose a jawbone, causing changes in the shape of your mouth and resulting in ill-fitting dentures. Dentures that do not fit properly can irritate your gums, causing bleeding and pain. If ignored, these symptoms can result in long-term health problems like infections or mouth ulcers.

To prevent jawbone loss, think about getting dental implants. Because these implants mimic the tooth root’s structure, they give your jawbone the necessary stimulation to keep its density.

    An Underlying Health Condition

In some instances, your gums can bleed due to a health condition. For instance, if you are using a blood thinner, gum bleeding is more likely to happen when you brush your teeth. Also, pregnancy can cause you to experience gum bleeding because of hormonal changes.
